How it works

Bat length comes first, then weight. Find the player's height on the chart for the length: 4′ 8″ is a 30 inch bat. Players lighter than the chart's range for their height drop an inch, and heavier ones add an inch. Check the fit before buying: stand the bat on the ground next to the player. The knob should reach the middle of the palm when the arm hangs at the side, and the player should be able to swing it without the barrel dropping. The weight in ounces is the length less the drop, so a 30 inch bat with a drop of 10 weighs 20 ounces.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size bat does my player need?

Use the player's height first, then weight. A player 4′ 8″ and about 85 pounds takes a 30 inch bat. Enter both above for the length, and see the chart below it for every height.

What does the drop weight mean?

Length in inches minus weight in ounces. A 30 inch, 20 ounce bat is a drop 10. A higher drop is lighter: drop 12 and drop 13 bats are common for the youngest players, drop 10 and 8 for the middle ages, and drop 5 and 3 for older players. A bat that is too heavy slows the swing.

Is a longer or a shorter bat better?

For most young players, shorter. A bat that is too long drops the barrel and slows the swing. Go longer only for a tall, strong player who controls it, and never because the player will grow into it.

Are softball bats sized the same way?

Yes. Fastpitch bats use the same length-by-height chart, and they run lighter, with drops of 10 to 13 for youth players. Check the bat's stamp for the standard your league requires.

How can I check a bat's fit without a chart?

Stand the bat on the ground, the knob by the player's side. The knob should reach the middle of the palm of the hand when the arm hangs straight. Then have the player hold the bat out with one hand: if the barrel droops within a few seconds, it is too heavy.
