Batting average
—

How it works

Batting average is hits divided by at-bats: AVG = H ÷ AB. Walks, hit by pitch and sacrifice flies are not at-bats, so leave them out. A player with 10 hits in 30 at-bats is batting 10 ÷ 30 = .333. The result is written to three decimals with no leading zero, the way a box score does.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is batting average calculated?

Divide hits by at-bats. 10 hits in 30 at-bats is 10 ÷ 30 = .333, said "three thirty-three".

Do walks count as at-bats?

No. Walks, hit by pitch, sacrifice bunts and sacrifice flies are plate appearances but not at-bats, so they do not change batting average. They do count in on-base percentage.

Is batting average figured differently in softball?

No. Hits divided by at-bats is the same in baseball and softball, at every age.

What is a good batting average?

In the major leagues .300 is excellent and .250 is about average. Youth and high school averages run higher because of the competition, so compare a player with their own league.

What if a player has no at-bats?

Batting average is undefined, so the calculator shows a dash until you enter at least one at-bat.
