How it works

ERA is earned runs per full game: ERA = (earned runs × innings in a game) ÷ innings pitched. A full game is 9 innings in baseball, 7 in most softball and high school games, and 6 in many youth leagues, so pick the game length your league plays. Write partial innings the way a box score does: .1 is one out (a third of an inning) and .2 is two outs, so 12.1 is twelve and a third innings. 3 earned runs in 7 innings is 3.00 in a 7-inning game.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you calculate earned run average?

Multiply earned runs by the innings in a full game, then divide by innings pitched. 3 earned runs in 7 innings over a 9-inning game is 3 × 9 ÷ 7 = 3.86.

How do I enter partial innings?

Use .1 for one out and .2 for two outs. 5.2 means five and two thirds innings. A .3 is not used; three outs make a full inning.

What is the ERA formula for softball?

The same formula with 7 innings for a game: earned runs × 7 ÷ innings pitched. Choose 7 innings above. Some younger leagues play 6.

Which runs are earned?

A run is earned when the batter reaches and scores without the help of an error or passed ball. Runs that score because of an error, or from a runner the pitcher inherits, are scored by the official scorer.

What is a good ERA?

In the major leagues, under 3.50 is good. Youth and softball pitchers are rated against their own league, and the length of the game changes the number, so compare ERAs only on the same game length.
