How it works

Glove length is measured from the top of the index finger down to the heel of the glove, and the chart gives the typical length for the player's age and position. Infielders use shorter gloves so the ball comes out of the pocket fast. Outfielders use longer ones for reach, and first basemen use a mitt. Catcher's mitts are measured around the edge instead, so the chart's catcher sizes are larger. The glove goes on the hand the player does not throw with. Brands size a little differently, so try one on: the player should be able to close it with the hand inside.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size baseball glove does my child need?

By age and position. For baseball, an 8 to 10 year old infielder takes a glove about 10½ to 11¼ inches, and an outfielder one of 11 to 12 inches. Choose the position, sport and age above.

Is a softball glove sized differently?

Yes. Softballs are larger, so softball gloves run a little bigger in the same age band, with a deeper pocket. A baseball glove can be used for softball only at the youngest ages.

Which hand does the glove go on?

The hand the player does not throw with. A right-handed thrower wears the glove on the left hand, and the glove is sold as a right-hand throw.

Should I buy a bigger glove to grow into?

No. A glove that is too big is hard to close and to catch with, and the player learns to trap the ball instead of catching it. Buy the size for the age, and replace it when the player moves up a band.

How do I measure a glove?

From the top of the index finger to the heel of the glove, along the palm side. The number is in inches, and it is the one on the glove's label. A catcher's mitt is measured around the outside edge instead.
