Double steal

A double steal is a play in which two base runners steal at the same time, most often runners on first and second taking third and second, or runners on first and third trying to score the runner from third.

With runners on first and second, a double steal puts pressure on the catcher: there is only one throw, and it has to go to third, where the lead runner is going. The trail runner usually gets second for free, so a good jump by the lead runner can move both runners into scoring position in one pitch.

With runners on first and third, the double steal is a scoring play. The runner on first breaks for second, and the runner on third goes home if the catcher throws through to second or if the throw is cut and comes back late. The runner on third has to read the throw rather than run blindly, and the timing is what the defense's first and third play is built to stop.

Both runners need the same sign at the same moment, so it is usually given by the third base coach and confirmed by each runner. On a wristband it is one call that both runners read before the pitch, which keeps a runner from going alone.

When to call it

  • Runners on first and second with a catcher who has trouble throwing to third.
  • Runners on first and third with two outs, where the offense needs a run and the batter is struggling.
  • A defense that does not have a first and third play, or does not communicate one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who goes first on a double steal?

On first and second, both runners go on the pitch, and the lead runner's jump matters most. On first and third, the runner on first goes on the pitch and the runner on third waits for the throw to go through to second.

How does the scorer credit a double steal?

Each runner who reaches the next base safely is credited with a stolen base. If one runner is thrown out, only the other runner gets the steal.
